It is National Smile Month, which means lots and lots of dental clinics, dentists and medical professionals are doing everything in their power to improve the nation’s oral health. How you brush is extremely important. Make small, circular movements to get the plaque and tartar off without damaging the enamel, and be gentle but firm. The use of dental floss and mouthwash is absolutely mandatory, because you cannot clean the back sides of teeth, the molars or the gaps between your teeth properly, and this is where tooth decay starts from. If you hate dental floss, use an interdental toothbrush, but make sure you clean those areas, as they are vital to your oral health. When buying mouthwash, make sure you only buy alcohol free ones, as the use of alcoholic mouthwash can dry out your mucous membranes, which causes more harm than good. Make sure to buy a new toothbrush every month or so. Dentists now say that toothbrushes start to lose their effectiveness every 4 to 6 weeks. The best way to test if your toothbrush is still good is to just take a look at it: are the bristles standing out all over the place? If so, it’s time to get a new one. Try and get high fluoride toothpaste, as this is best for your teeth, and try and avoid SLS, Parabens and other harmful chemicals commonly found in toothpaste.

Don’ts

It is important that you not brush so hard. Most people brush too hard, which damages their enamel and is kind of counterproductive, as the teeth’s ability to resist bacteria weakens from the damaged enamel. Overzealous brushing can also cause gums to recede, as they are being bombarded constantly while being brushed. Smoking is one of the greatest problems your teeth can encounter, as the smoke has many carcinogens and chemicals which are bad for the teeth and gums. Try and steer clear of sugars and carbohydrates, as this causes massive proliferation of harmful bacteria in the mouth.
