How To Avoid Dry Mouth

Xerostomia is the medical term used to talk about chronic dryness of the mouth. People with xerostomia usually have much more cavities, have gum disease and gum recession, and, bleeding gums and periodontitis much more easily than people with a well lubricated mouth. In this article we wish to speak a little about dry mouth, what causes it, how to avoid it, and what can be done to rehabilitate dried out mucus membranes.

Why is dry mouth bad?

The human mouth needs some amount of lubrication. It needs saliva to be in there in order to hydrate the gum tissues, which need a certain amount of water to be able to fulfil their function, which is none other than keeping teeth healthy and in their place. But the gums can be thought of as a giant mucous membrane, and when a mucous membrane dries out, it cracks and bleeds, and become infected. Saliva also has antibacterial qualities, and is a completely necessary part of your immune responses to bacteria being in the mouth. Without it, the bacteria that are otherwise at bay can proliferate uninterrupted, causing periodontitis, tooth decay, halitosis and a whole host of other problems.

What causes dry mouth?

Smoking is one of the most frequent causes of xerostomia. If you smoke, you are much more likely to develop dry mouth, and alcohol also does the same. Certain medication, like antibiotics can also cause this to occur. But systemic diseases like diabetes also have dry mouth as a side effect. Eating too much salt or sugar, and of course not drinking enough water are also main causes of this problem.

How to treat a dry mouth

The easiest and most obvious way to treat dry mouth problem is to drink more water, but as always, the most obvious solution frequently will not help. If you have kidney problems or diabetes, for example, you can drink all the water in the world, your mouth will still be dry, and the problems associated with that will still be present. Eating more D vitamins, taking good care of your teeth, minimising your sugar intake, and consulting with your dentist and finding out what is causing the mouth dryness, and then treating the problem itself will be the best ways to deal with this problem.
