Periodontitis Can Lead To Erectile Dysfunction

As if you needed another reason to keep your half year check-ups, doctors are now saying that gum disease can cause erectile dysfunction in men.
This startling find is not new, and just goes to strengthen the current notion that all parts of the body are connected and are dependent on each other. Read on to find out more.

Periodontitis Can Lead To Erectile Dysfunction

How does periodontitis affect your ability to have sex?

The human penis is a marvel of biology; it has many different kinds of tissues, and an intricate system of blood vessels that make it work. When blood flows to the blood vessels, the tissue expands and hardens, and thus copulation can occur. If the blood vessels are damaged in any way, then the tissues cannot expand, and thus the penis will not become fully erect.
Periodontitis affects the functioning of the penis in two ways. First of all, the bacteria that cause periodontitis are plaque forming bacteria. This plaque can block the capillaries and veins, and so limit the blood flow to where it is needed. Second, the lining of the blood vessels is made up of a very special kind of cell called an endothelial cell, which can be utterly ruined by the bacteria that cause periodontitis, and thus the blood flow is again not directed the way it should. Both of these have the same result; an inability to perform in bed.

What can be done

If you are in your 30s, it is absolutely mandatory to go to your half year check-ups with your dentist. If you fail to do so, not only will you have periodontitis and nasty smelling breath, or even cavities, you may also start feeling problems elsewhere in the body, too. At these check-ups, the health and wellbeing of your gums and oral cavity is rigorously checked, and any problems are found out before they start to become massive problems.
If you already have periodontitis, do not worry. There is nothing that cannot be undone, and usually a few cleaning sessions are enough to rid you of the pesky bacterial infection. Once you are free from bacteria in the mouth, the colonies in other parts will start to decrease, and normal functioning of your body should begin again shortly.
