Dental implants provide the only form of anatomically full and complete tooth replacement that we have to this very day. This does not mean that they are perfect though. This merely means that they are our only option currently, but they do have some problems with them that are very rarely talked about on the internet. Here is a quick list of the disadvantages that dental implants have. Please note that they are still by far the best tooth replacement method available today, and are the only way to replace the tooth roots and every other part of the tooth as well.
Cost of dental implants
Perhaps the most limiting aspect of dental implants is the price of dental implants. They cost considerably more than any other form of tooth replacement, and although these costs are understandable and are fair, they still exclude a very large chunk of the population that would otherwise need them. So far government health plans have not put tooth replacement on their bills, so the only way to get them is through private dental or medical establishments.
Time of getting a dental implant
Dental implants take several visits. You need to go and get them done, but then you need to go back in three months and then again at least twice to get a crown and an abutment fitted and placed on the dental implant. Healing time can be up to a year in extreme cases, but is at least three months, even with a healthy jaw that needed no extra surgery or bone grafting. The median amount of time needed to heal is a little above four months. A denture can be had in a week.
Excluding health factors
Dental implants are only ethically marketable to patients who have good bone density and whose dental condition is not likely to suddenly deteriorate. This means that people with degenerative bone diseases or any condition that can suddenly cause a decline of health and of bone density are immediately off limits, as are people who have blood-borne illnesses and illnesses of the blood, as well as patients suffering from immune disorders or conditions that weaken the immune system.
