Mario Fortunato, author, literary critic and former Director of our Italian Cultural Institute, presents his latest book L’Italia degli altri, published by Neri Pozza.
Having lived in Rome but also in New York, Berlin, Como, Milan and London, Fortunato is in a perfect position to explore, in this book, the theme of Italy as seen by foreigners. He narrates stories but also makes digressions, looks at his relationship with his homeland and with contemporary and past artists, recounts the creation of two neighbouring but very different gardens, reflects on his native town in Calabria and for the first time sees it more like a haven of lost happiness than just a stretch of land mortified by crime and violence. Then distances himself from the commonplace ideas the English have about the Italians and viceversa. All the while illustrating how it happens that foreigners, looking for perfect happiness within the beauty of Italy, end up feeling suffocated and overwhelmed.
Mario Fortunato will read some passages from the book.
